angelo mastronardi quartet color

After his lucky debut with the piano trio album “Like at The Beginning” (Dodicilune/IRD), that received enthusiastic reviews and was awarded by the magazine JAZZIT, Angelo Mastronardi published the new album in quartet with Emanuele Coluccia (tenor and soprano sax), Stefano Rielli (double bass) and Alex Semprevivo (drums).
In line with the debut work, “New Things, Same Words” reveals in its title the key elements for the interpretation of the author’s concept map, referring to originality as a combination of preexisting elements. Melodic spontaneity is combined with structural research. The recording includes all original compositions written by himself except for track 6, written by Emanuele Coluccia. For the first time he introduces new instruments like Fender Rhodes, soprano and tenor saxophone. The harmonic language is more complex, quite in opposition to the simple and cantabile melodies, that however hide sophisticated rythmic textures and unusual metric solutions, in line with the research started by the pianist in his debut album. Improvisations reveal the influence of the new American avant – garde and the jazz tradition with a typical European sensibility for sound, space and dynamics.

Angelo Mastronardi is pianist and composer. He started his musical journey by himself and immediately he combined classical music with improvisation. He studied at Tuscia in Jazz Summer Camp 2012 with Aaron Goldberg, Donny McClaslin, Scott Colley and Antonio Sanchez and later he followed the clinics at Berklee College in Boston at Umbria Jazz in 2016 with the american pianist Kevin Harris. He played in many Festivals like the Umbria Jazz Festival 2016 with the organist Dennis Montgomery III and bassist Paul Del Nero, Cotton Club in Rome and he opened Stefano Bollani’ solo piano concert during Festival Città della Musica di Squinzano in 2015.
